5th Sunday of Easter

“A branch cannot bear fruit unless it remains in me.” These words echo through the ages, reminding us of the essential connection we have with our Lord. Today, as we reflect on the significance of receiving the Lord not just once, but repeatedly, let us understand the depth of this relationship.

Receiving the Lord for the first time is indeed a momentous occasion, but let us not forget the importance of each subsequent encounter. Our goal is not merely to experience a single moment of communion, but to remain connected with Him throughout our lives, from the beginning to the end.

To remain in Jesus is to immerse ourselves in His teachings, to let His words take root in our hearts, and to bear the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Just as a skilled gardener prunes the branches to ensure a bountiful harvest, so too does the Lord prune us through His holy words and sacraments. He removes the excess, the impurities, so that we may bloom and grow, bearing abundant fruit.

Yet, we must not shy away from this process of pruning. It is through this purification that we find true life and fruitfulness in Christ. Let us embrace His grace, nourishing our souls through the sacraments, and imitating His devotional life in our own practices of prayer, worship, and fellowship.

Our participation in the Mass is central to our life in Christ, but it is not the only aspect. As we partake in communion, we share in His divine life, becoming more like Him with each encounter. And though we may stumble along the way, let us remember that it is through our humanity that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

So, my dear friends, let us remain steadfast in our connection with the Lord, allowing His love to transform us from within. May we be pruned and nourished by His grace, bearing fruit that glorifies His name and enriches the world around us.

Amen.
