Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The love of the Lord envelops us, and in recent weeks, our Lord has communicated profound truths through parables, addressing the elders of the people. From the tale of the disobedient son to the parable of the tenants, and now, the parable of the wedding banquet, a theme of divine kindness and generosity resonates.

This parable illuminates the universal love and invitation of the king, underscoring the crucial need for a responsible response from those fortunate enough to be beneficiaries. To truly appreciate a parable, it should be seen as a mirror reflecting the realities of life. As the parable suggests, the blessings and joys we receive are akin to God’s invitation to goodness, requiring a responsible and mindful response.

In the parable, judgment is rendered on those who ignore the king’s invitation, as well as on the one who responds but is not properly attired. Proper dressing, in this context, symbolizes responding responsibly to the opportunities and gifts bestowed upon us. Such responsibility touches every facet of our human experience:

  • Personal Finances: Budgeting, saving, and wise spending are imperative.
  • Health and Fitness: Nurturing the body through regular exercise and a balanced diet.
  • Career: Meeting deadlines, being accountable, and continually honing skills.
  • Relationships: Emphasizing communication, trust, and support for others.
  • Education: A commitment to learning and personal growth.
  • Environmental Impact: Being mindful of one’s ecological footprint.
  • Time Management: Maximizing productivity and balancing work and leisure.
  • Self-Care: Prioritizing mental health, relaxation, and breaks.
  • Community Involvement: Contributing to the well-being of the community.

Citing the wisdom of Pope Benedict XVI in “Deus Caritas Est” and Pope Francis in “Laudato Si’,” responsibility extends beyond personal realms to familial and societal dimensions. It involves addressing issues of justice, compassion, and responsible care for creation.

A lack of responsible response to these gifts disrupts the harmonious symphony that God orchestrates. The reminder that “Many are called, but few are chosen” serves as an encouragement for us to be among the chosen—those who respond responsibly, adorned in the wedding garment of faith. Let us be ready to partake in God’s goodness on earth and the eternal celebration of His love in heaven.

Have a great week!
