Immaculate Conception

The word Denzinger-Schönmetzer came up in discourse at our clergy assembly recently. Curiosity persisted in the room, generating questions about what it meant. “It’s the Enchiridion symbolorum—sounds like a disease doesn’t it?” said a Monsignor, with a lighthearted laugh. Indeed, our Faith is interlaced with concepts that are both challenging and profound: transubstantiation, Magisterium, Canonical Impediment, Apostolic Nuncio, Cura Animarum, assumption, nativity, Prevenient Grace, and much more. But they all mean something wonderful.

Today, our hearts are filled with joy as we commemorate the Immaculate Conception. hmm..The dogma of the IC asserts that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was preserved from the effects of Adam’s sin—commonly known as “original sin”—from the very inception of her being. This aligns seamlessly with Christ’s mission of sanctification; as our salvation and reconciliation manifested in human form, he couldn’t be burdened by the condition he aimed to redeem.

Original sin, a persistent force that affects our relationships on multiple levels—with ourselves, others, and God—finds a remedy in Christ. Mary, as the Savior’s mother, was protected from these effects by prevenient grace, staying unspoiled by the stain of original sin. Thus the absence of inherited original sin ensures Jesus emerged as the spotless and flawless God-man, free of the repercussions of the Fall-shame, blame, and alienation.

Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we be graced to live without sin. Amen.
