‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?” Mt 21:33-43, 45-46
Usually, the decline into disorder and decay do not happen over night. We observe in the parable of the tenants as told by Jesus, that the master sent several servants, at different times, perhaps over a long period of time. The tenants after being marinated in the culture of unaccountability for so long, eventually killed the heir. The decline was gradual. Lent calls our awareness to this decline, and offers us the opportunity of breaking from negative habits and give back to God the fruits of lives worthy of our Christian identity. “For we are living stones, being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1Peter 2:5
