“There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table.” Lk 16:19-31
The story of Lazarus reminds of the corporal work of mercy of feeding the hungry. Believe it or not, people still die of hunger and malnutrition. Christ teaches us through the story of Lazarus, it is unacceptable to be insensitive to hunger in the world.
This charity of feeding the poor should be about love, care and concern. This love makes us care not only about giving food, for “man shall not live by bread alone”. We are invited also to address the hunger for meaning and direction in our world. Although the demand to feed the hungry is challengingly open ended, there is always a “Lazarus” at the door. Through the help of Divine grace, may we be sensitive to the needs of those at our door.
