The awareness of the nature of the end is part of the wisdom and knowledge we are enriched with in Christ. The majority of the pictures that come to mind when we think of the apocalypse are of turmoil, battles, battling over scant resources, and so on. Even when we turn to the scriptures, these elements are present, especially in the book of Revelation. However the apocalypse truly means “unveiling,” or “revelation,” and the purpose is not the calamities, fear, and panic that are inevitable human responses to unexpected change. The goal is the reassurance of the triumph of Good over Evil. Thus, as a new liturgical year begins, we begin by preparing for the end! An end that involves the coming of our Lord, who is the Alpha and Omega. (Rev 22:13 “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last.”)
In Advent, we cultivate the art of longing for our Lord. This holy anticipation puts the end into perspective even as we contemplate his coming in the past and present, and gives our journey of faith direction and purpose.
As St. Gregory of Nyssa put it, “Let your life be the answer to the Lord’s cry: ‘Watch!'” As you wait for His return, let the candle of faith guide you and the oil of good actions fuel your trip. Happy Advent!
Waiting in silence,
waiting in hope,
we are your people,
we long for you, Lord.
Lord God, ever with us,
Emmanuel.
Come Lord Jesus.
Maranatha!
