Daily Reflection – July 22, 2026: Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene – I Have Seen the Lord

Scripture: John 20:1-2, 11-18; Song of Songs 3:1-4b; Psalm 63

The liturgical feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, celebrated on July 22, commemorates the woman recognized by the Church as the Apostle to the Apostles. The liturgical readings for this day emphasize the transition from the search for the deceased Christ to the commission of the risen Lord.

In the Gospel of John (20:1-2, 11-18), the narrative begins with Mary Magdalene discovering the empty tomb. The text records her initial distress and her subsequent encounter with two angels. The central moment of the passage occurs when the risen Jesus Christ appears and addresses her by name. This personal recognition transforms her grief into a mission. Jesus instructs her not to cling to Him but to go to His brothers and announce the Resurrection, stating, "I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God."

The Society of St. Peter the Apostle, a branch of The Pontifical Mission Societies, observes this feast by reflecting on the necessity of local messengers to proclaim the Gospel. Just as Mary Magdalene was sent to her own community with the message of the Resurrection, the Society supports the formation of indigenous clergy and religious in mission territories. This work ensures that the proclamation, "I have seen the Lord," is carried out by those who share the language and culture of the people they serve.

The first reading from the Song of Songs (3:1-4b) provides a poetic parallel to the soul’s search for the beloved, while the alternative reading from 2 Corinthians 5:14-17 highlights the theological reality that anyone in Christ is a new creation. These texts underscore the interior preparation required for those called to religious life.

Since its founding in 1889, the Society of St. Peter the Apostle has provided ordinary subsidies for the daily needs and formation of seminarians, novices, and religious sisters. This support includes:

  • Funding for the construction and renovation of seminaries.
  • Scholarships for future seminary educators.
  • Financial assistance for self-sustainability projects within mission dioceses.

By facilitating the education of local leaders, the Church maintains its commitment to sustainable, locally-led growth. Closing Prayer

O God, whose only-begotten Son entrusted Mary Magdalene before all others with announcing the great joy of the Resurrection, grant, we pray, that through her intercession and example, the faithful may proclaim the living Christ and come to behold Him reigning in Your glory. Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
